How often do you get to see the amphibrach foot in poetry?
This page is about the amphibrach meter and the inspiration for the poem is George Henry, who would scream from the time the key turned in the ignition until the car stopped.
How much fun is that?
So I call it Ode to George Henry, but you probably know this kid from your own experience. He could be in your car, God help you.
I'm flat on my back in this stinky old carJeannette Ramirez
Can't see where I'm going; don't know where we are.
Strapped down so I can't move the least little bit
My onesy is cramping - I grew out of it.
No one pays attention to how I might feel
Stuck in the back of this automobile.
My parents in front are just having a ball
But the back of their heads there is pretty much allThat I can see 'cept for some trees whizzing by
With nothing to do but to whimper or cry.
Dad has his driving and Mom has her book
No one will spare me a nod or a look.My diaper is wet and it might even smell,
I've spit up again and don't feel very well.
They're snacking on cookies up there in the front
Not paying attention to what I might want.HOW DARE THEY ignore me, I'm starting to STEAM
One thing I can do, though, I'll let out a SCREAM!
I'm flat on/ my back in/ this stinky/ old car
Can't see where/ I'm going;/ don't know where/ we are.
The last foot is held for two beats. It is actually an iamb (duh DUH).
This particular poem is one of my favorites. Believe me, this is a life experience. The kid is my grandson and he had a "car issue."
