Civil War Toasts and Poems for the Maven

Civil War Toasts, you ask? Here at the pub, we have our serious moments, usually in the wee early hours. Setting historical material to rhyme is a good mnemonic for remembering it. In fact, there is an entire book on such topics in the works. You are invited to reserve a copy of Literati Limericks before the publishing date at no cost or obligation.

And speaking of writing upon weighty themes such as the Civil War Toasts... These were done for a friend who is a War Between the States buff. Indeed, he wrote The Longest Raid of the Civil War which received a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

Challenge: In Remembrance

Here's to you, all you died in this war
Where brother fought brother to shore
Up the homes that you made
And the lives that you laid
Down in faith, in our thoughts evermore.

Challenge: Longest Raid

Here's to you, and the Confederation
We'll hoist a glass in celebration
Of General John Morgan
That most awesome organ
Of Southern State's retaliation.
Yikes! Politics...Kathleen blanches. What's next, religion?

—or, egads! Could there be more topics regarding culture?

Challenge: Civil War Poems

Beauregard Fires On Fort
The headlines of that day report
Eighteen sixty-one
And Sumpter was won
For Anderson's troops were caught short.

The days Sherman marched to the Sea
“Scortched earth" was their tough strategy.
The Atlanta Campaign
Just before, gave them gain
In November, eighteen sixty-three.

Abe Lincoln said the Constitution
Forbad break-up as resolution
of differing opinions
So set Northern minions
Against Southern, in retribution.

Our American Cousin was quite
Well underway at Ford that night
Booth had bad reaction
To Lincoln's planned action
To let the blacks vote as their right.
Hmmm...should we approach this history business more methodically? 14th Century limericks right this way.
