Here Be Free Poems for Dogs or Cats
Funny and Sad

Free poems for dogs, cats and others are here. They (somewhat tenuously) share the planet with us and deserve our respect and proper husbandry.

At the Door
Who cares when you come in the door?
Lives to play fetching games, tug-of-war?
You're the world to your pet
Better friend, you won't get
And that is what puppies (or canines) are for.
There are cat people and dog people and you know which you are. Molly's family has had both at various times, the dogs rather more assigned to the menfolk, and the cats to the ladies. Some pets leave a very deep impression and their passing hurts more than one might suspect.

Molly's cat, Misty, died some time ago at age nineteen (yes, she was a Methuzela cat) but echoes of her personality still abide. She would come to sit on the keyboard while Molly was yet using it, as if to say, "You have had enough of sitwork today, get up and move." She was not an aloof cat, as is sometimes attributed to felines, cats are merely dignified and proper. From time to time, she brought offerings for the table, to the front door, her earnest green eyes no doubt puzzled that they were not served up immediately.

Cats and dogs work their way into our hearts for the unconditional love they provide. The children wanted to replace Misty with a kitten, but you know, pets are not really interchangeable, are they? Each comes with a personality which is unique. Pet sympathy poems are here, a start at least, and perhaps more later.

Losing a pet is sad. Poorly treated pets are yet sadder. PETA has much to say about such things.
Pet Sympathy Poems
Losing a Pet
Does the world stop because your dog died?
No it doesn't, yet dogs are allied
To the human adventure
When they leave, we could venture
To say, poignant echoes abide.
Variation for the Cat
Does the world stop because your cat died?
No it doesn't, yet cats are allied
To the human adventure
When they leave, we could venture
To say, poignant echoes abide.
We're sorry you're missing your friend
Please don't feel you need to defend
The pain that you feel
We know that it's real
For a pet's love can never pretend.

Let us turn this sad page and consider instead the humor and devotion our pets, and other animals, bring to our lives. Free poems for dogs, cat humor, and even the more exotic type of animal are fair game for this page, so to speak.

Challenge: Dog Jokes
What a Pet is Not
Pups and kittens grow to cats and dogs
But the pet-owner knows they’re not clogs
In Man-centered times,
All locations and climes,
Fellow travelers in Man's epilog.
Compare: Cats or Dogs?
Debate rages on, sides stand pat
Is the best pet a dog or a cat?
The dog's built for action,
The cat? Satisfaction.
Are esteemed, pro and con, tit for tat.
Digital or Analog?
Not just entries in some catalog
Of taxonomy, your pet's not mere clog
The dog's built for action,
The cat? Satisfaction
Dogs are digital, cats analog.
Challenge: Cat Humor
About Cats
A feline's a beautiful creature
Your home's most decorative feature
Equanimity's guide
Teaching grace, poise and pride.
The cat should have been a schoolteacher.
Variation: About Cats
A feline's a beautiful creature
Your home's most decorative feature
Gracing sofas and laps
Demonstrating cat-naps.
The cat should have been a schoolteacher.
Take a Number
A feline's a dignified creature
Not needy, a character feature.
Still loyal and true,
Will get back to you
When her nap's done,
and THEN you can reach her.
Large Pets?
Should you limit yourself to the mammal,
Get a big one and let the thing trammel
Through field, flower-bed
When your neighbor sees red
You'll be walking a mile for your camel.
