It's tough to find good clean funny stuff that you can share with the kids, isn't it? These couplets describe how that darn Muse hits at the most inconvenient times and places, and the funniest thing of all, is that every word is true.
When in my car the Muse will speak
And give me poems I cannot keep
Because I lose them in the car
No matter how profound they are
Expressways simply aren't the place
To scribble them while autos race
Recording poems while cars zip by
Is asking for a way to die.
The shower is another place
Where rhyme and meter rain with grace
As easily as water flows
I wonder where that poesy goes?
And there's a third place more, it seems,
I lose a lot within my dreams
When half awake in bed at night
Reluctant to turn on the light.
Which would, no doubt, wake up my spouse,
Who, like a bear, would growl and grouse
And writing in the dark is out
He'd hear the scratching pen and pout
Nor could I read the poems I write
In blackest dark in bed at night
I should get up and leave the room
To pluck those fragile buds that bloom
For inspiration will not keep
Oh, what the heck, I need the sleep.
