How to write a poem?

How to write a poem? Use your life circumstances in writing your poetry. This one, Titled "The Orchid" was inspired from a plant that expired in my care.

It was a Mother's Day gift.

I've been wondering if the kids have been introduced to me?

The Orchid

On Mother's Day I got this plant
I'd sooner have an elephant
At elephant, at least, would say
"Please feed me! FEED ME!" Anyway...

The orchid, lovely, fragile, sits
And waits for care from idiots
Who have no clue of botany
How patient can a green thing be?

Expiring without a word
At least, not one that I have heard.
I don't speak gardening for sure
The kids should know this - and the cure

Is gifting me with things I want
And no, that's not an elephant,
And not a plant, it's not my style
For I prefer to spend the while

Just writing on my keyboard here.
Ideas to me are precious, dear,
So give me please, a course or book
About philosophies that shook

The world for bad or good. Suffice,
To say that they are worth the price
And far more sturdy, certainly,
Than fragile orchid husbandry.

How to write poems is not as large a question as do you have anything to say? It's your life and it is filled with humor, grief, anger or angst.

Try to capture those thoughts while they dance on your mind. Use paper, computer, or digital recorder. There has never been a "you" before, and there will never be a "you" again. The major plots to everything are already covered, but never before with your perspective.

Study up on the forms and start with something familiar - consider the limerick, haiku, or one of the tetrameters (iambic, trochaic, amphibrachic, anapestic - whatever). If you want something extremely romantic or larger than life, consider terza rima or iambic pentameter. Discussions of these forms are on this website.
